What should a TradingView alert message say?
Send a ticker, open or close, and long or short. Plain text works, like OPEN SPY LONG. JSON works too, with action, ticker and direction. So does TradingView's strategy message. No template is required, and your own wording is read too. The alert never sets the size. Each bot's Budget per entry does.
Official documentation
Write the message in four steps
- 1
Name the ticker
Use the symbol you trade. In JSON the field can be ticker, symbol or instrument. TradingView's {{ticker}} placeholder fills it in for you.
- 2
Say open or close, and the side
Use OPEN or CLOSE, and LONG or SHORT. A strategy alert can send buy or sell with marketPosition and prevMarketPosition. Nyria reads open or close from the change. TradingView's default strategy text works when the ticker is on the strategy's list. One that only trims a position is refused.
- 3
Add a price for limit orders
A price counts on a limit order. Send order_type limit with it, or set the limit target to Alert price. For market orders, leave it out.
- 4
Check what Nyria reads
Paste the message into the alert tester. Then select Check format on the strategy. Placeholders are filled in before the check.

What each field does
- ticker, symbol or instrument names the underlying. Any of the three works.
- action is OPEN or CLOSE.
- direction is LONG or SHORT. On an option strategy, LONG uses the call rule and SHORT the put rule.
- price is only for limit orders.
- Size never comes from the message. Each bot's Budget per entry sets it.
What to leave out
- Logins and passwords. TradingView warns against putting them in a webhook message.
- A note with no trade in it. A message needs an action and a direction. The alert tester shows the refusal Nyria would give.
- Strategy placeholders in an indicator alert. They only fill in on a strategy alert.
Questions
- Does a TradingView alert message have to be JSON?
- No. TradingView sends valid JSON as application/json and anything else as text/plain. Nyria reads both.
- Is there a template I have to match?
- No. Plain wording works too. Paste the message into the alert tester to see what Nyria reads.
- Can the message set how many shares to buy?
- No. The bot sizes each order from its Budget per entry.
- Can one message cover both buy and sell?
- Yes, in a strategy alert. The action and market position placeholders tell Nyria open or close. Create the alert once per ticker.
- What does it cost?
