E*TRADE automated trading from alerts
E*TRADE publishes an official REST API that places orders in your account via OAuth 1.0a. A developer application is required, and a sandbox key takes a few business days. The API trades stocks, options and crypto spot. Every access token expires at midnight Eastern Time; the user must sign in again each day to renew. Nyria is adding an E*TRADE connection. It is coming soon. Use Nyria Paper to test the same alert-to-order logic for free while you wait.
Official documentation
How Nyria will connect E*TRADE
- 1
Apply for a sandbox key
Request a sandbox key at developer.etrade.com. A US E*TRADE brokerage account is required. Sandbox approval typically takes a few business days.
- 2
Test in the E*TRADE sandbox
The sandbox at apisb.etrade.com uses the same API surface as production. Run all order types you plan to automate in sandbox before requesting a production key.
- 3
Request a production key
Once sandbox testing passes, send a secure message to E*TRADE to request a production key. E*TRADE reviews the application; the timeline is not published.
- 4
Join early access in Nyria
Go to nyria.io/integrations/etrade and add your email. Nyria will contact you when the E*TRADE connection opens.
- 5
Plan for daily re-consent
The E*TRADE access token expires at midnight Eastern Time every day. Nyria will prompt re-consent before the next market open. Trading pauses until you complete the OAuth flow again.
What the E*TRADE API covers
- US stocks and ETFs, long and short, with the account's margin and short-selling permissions.
- Options, single legs and spreads, at the account's options approval level.
- Crypto spot for US clients, available as of July 2026.
- E*TRADE does not extend its Customer Protection Guarantee to orders placed through the API, per its developer terms.
The daily midnight expiry rule
- Every E*TRADE access token expires at midnight US Eastern Time, with no exception.
- The only way to renew is a fresh OAuth flow where the user logs in and clicks consent.
- Nyria cannot renew the token automatically across midnight. Re-consent is required once per ET day.
- An idle token also inactivates after two hours of no API calls. Nyria renews it hourly to keep it active through the trading day.
Questions
- Why does the E*TRADE token expire at midnight?
- E*TRADE's API requires a new authorize step each calendar day. This is a hard rule of the E*TRADE OAuth 1.0a flow and cannot be changed by Nyria.
- When will the Nyria E*TRADE connection open?
- It is coming soon. Join the early-access list at nyria.io/integrations/etrade to be notified when it opens.
- Does E*TRADE have a sandbox?
- Yes, at apisb.etrade.com. The sandbox uses the same API surface as production and is the right place to test before going live.
- What does it cost?
- Paper is free. Live trading from $15 a month.
